As we went into 2020 the world saw the start of a global pandemic, the Covid-19 virus. On the evening of 23rd March 2020, the Prime Minister announced that the population of the country would need to go into a state of lockdown to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 and reduce the pressure of the NHS, so that it would have capacity to treat those who needed the limited provision that Intensive Care Units provide.

I have been hugely fortunate throughout this time to be living in rural Mid Suffolk, in a  small village set within a vast and beautiful landscape. Having previously walked many of the footpaths in this locality, I saw the opportunity to take regular exercise during this time and to re-walk many of the paths I have walked during the last decade, and to walk paths that I had not yet explored.

I have documented my daily life through photographs since graduating. Taking landscape photographs while out on walks has been a part of this, and so it was natural to continue taking photos on these 'lockdown walks'. With walking becoming a little more frequent due to having more time available for exercise and recreation, I became aware that the landscape photos were building into a growing collection of their own. I noted that by mid April, that the location and situation in which I found myself were common threads , and so I started to archive the images accordingly, by creating folders of the photos that described my walks on a  day to day basis, I came to know this volume of work as 'Lockdown Landscapes'

I have kept a map of the routes I have walked from the start of the lockdown, an accumulative map, where by each path walked is added, which gradually grows the map (using Google Earth). By May 2020 I started to map individual walks, to provide a context to each folder of photographs. I have started to be more methodical in the taking of photos, which has allowed the project to develop from its start point.

As lockdown continues, so will his project, it may even develop further. Meantime the images are now available to view via the links below
